The department is a vital part of the hospital’s Chest Pain Center, which is the first in Shenzhen to be nationally certified. It is also an integral member of the hospital’s Stroke Center, Trauma Center, Critical Maternal Treatment Center, and Critical Children and Neonatal Treatment Center. The emergency department is responsible for pre-hospital first aid and hospital treatment of various acute and critical conditions.
The Emergency Department of the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is designed to provide a comfortable and efficient environment, serving as a key department for medical emergency services. It offers a seamless process where registration, payment, medication, and treatment are all handled within the department, making it highly convenient for patients. The pre-hospital first aid equipment is comprehensive, with ambulance vehicles equipped with GPS and communication systems connected to the emergency center. Medical staff are well-trained, and the ambulances are outfitted with advanced medical equipment, including ventilators, defibrillation monitors, AEDs, endotracheal intubation devices, and bedside rapid detection tools. Once a task is received, the team can be dispatched within one minute, ensuring 24-hour availability. The department has also implemented a pre-treatment process before payment, significantly reducing the treatment time for critical patients. Additionally, an emergency network for chest pain patients has been established, collaborating with the cardiovascular department and other hospitals to ensure rapid access to standard treatment for patients with acute chest pain, improving treatment success rates. The Emergency Stroke Center is being developed according to national standards and has opened a green channel for emergency thrombolysis and surgical treatments.
The Emergency Department of the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is equipped to provide comprehensive 24-hour care for acute and critical patients. The department includes a variety of specialties such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, and Oral Cavity, all available on-call at all times. The department operates four emergency stations, a 32-bed emergency ward, and a 19-bed Emergency Intensive Care Unit (EICU). A comprehensive emergency medical system integrates pre-hospital first aid, hospital rescue, emergency observation, emergency wards, and EICU, ensuring high-quality, year-round care for patients within the jurisdiction.
The Emergency Department covers about 5,000 square meters and is equipped with 9 consultation rooms, 1 resuscitation room, 1 operating room, 1 debridement and suturing room, 1 wound cleansing room, 60 infusion stations, and 20 observation beds. It also offers 24-hour emergency auxiliary examinations, including electrocardiograms, X-ray, CT, and B-ultrasound. The department is outfitted with advanced emergency facilities such as multifunctional monitors, defibrillators, bedside cardiac injury marker detectors, ventilators, electric defibrillators, emergency percutaneous and transvenous pacemakers, automatic cardiopulmonary resuscitators, electrocardiographs, ventilators, gastric lavage machines, bronchoscopes, bedside hemodialysis units, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) systems. Our highly skilled emergency team is capable of efficiently managing various types of acute, critical, and trauma cases, demonstrating a robust capacity for handling emergencies and a significant volume of patients simultaneously.
The Emergency Department at the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is staffed by a dedicated and highly qualified team of medical professionals. Currently, the department employs 53 doctors, including 1 Chief Physician, 7 Associate Chief Physicians, 25 Attending Physicians, 19 Resident Doctors, and 1 full-time scientific research personnel. Among these, 5 hold doctoral degrees, 27 hold master's degrees, and 21 hold undergraduate degrees. The department also has 1 doctoral supervisor and 3 postgraduate supervisors. The nursing team consists of 93 nurses, including 1 Chief Nurse, 1 Associate Chief Nurse, 33 Supervisor Nurses, and 58 Nurse Practitioners. All medical and nursing staff in the department are proficient in primary cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced life support (ALS), ensuring they can perform various rescue operations promptly, such as tracheal intubation, tracheotomy, CPR, external defibrillation, and deep vein catheterization. This expertise significantly enhances the success rate of rescuing acute and critical patients.
The department has substantial experience in treating patients with cardiac and respiratory arrest, malignant arrhythmias, acute cerebrovascular accidents, various types of trauma, and poisonings. Every year, a large number of critical patients, including those with cardiac and respiratory arrests, are successfully rescued. The department has established green channels for critical patients, including those with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), acute cerebral infarction, acute left heart failure, acute brain injuries, acute trauma, acute respiratory failure, and critically ill pregnant women. Among these, the green channel for AMI patients is particularly well-established and standardized, significantly improving the success rate of AMI patient rescues. Additionally, the department prioritizes public education on first aid, conducting several CPR and first aid training sessions outside the hospital every year to raise awareness and equip the public with life-saving knowledge.
